Arc Flash PPE Maintenance Dos and Don’ts

Arc Flash PPE Maintenance Dos and Don’ts

The Dos and Don’ts of Arc Flash PPE Maintenance

If you’ve ever purchased arc flash personal protective equipment (PPE), you know that it isn’t exactly an inexpensive purchase. But this is because of the highly engineered materials used, the extensive testing required and the fact that the gear has the ability to protect workers when exposed to a potentially devastating arc flash it is a justified, essential expense.

Due to this large expense, it is common practice for companies to share PPE, as most companies cannot justify purchasing each worker their own personal gear, especially if they only work on high-voltage equipment occasionally.

In this COVID-19 world, an emphasis on cleanliness and hygiene is of utmost importance to companies and employees alike. But, how do companies keep their shared arc flash PPE clean and safe for workers?

DOs

According to the Safe Work Australia recommendations, washing on a regular cycle wash using the warmest possible setting with normal mild washing detergent is one of the best ways to prevent the spread of COVID-19, but to also seek advice from the manufacturers. Product care information for all Elliotts arc flash PPE products can be found on the information labels sewn into your garment.

DON’Ts

Whilst washing is the most effective way of cleaning your arc flash PPE, it is not really the most practical solution for on-the-job sanitation. Companies may look to using disinfecting sprays and wipes to clean their arc flash PPE, but it is not recommended for multiple reasons. Disinfecting sprays are not intended to be used on soft, porous materials so the intended level of saturation and cleanliness cannot be achieved. Additionally, many of the chemicals used to manufacture these sprays include potentially flammable liquids, which may leave a residue, even when dry – which ultimately will negatively impact the garment’s ability to protect the wearer.

Face Shields

The material that covers the hood will still need to be maintained as above, but the actual face shield can be cleaned and disinfected quite easily. Simply disassemble the hood, flush off the dirt and grit with room temperature water, and use a soft clean cloth to wipe and gently clean both sides of the shield.
