How to pick the Best Welding Gloves

Helpful Guide For Selecting Welding Gloves

Since there is an overwhelming number of welding gloves to choose from, it is critical to have a good strategy for selecting the right pair for the job. To guide your decision making we recommend using the 3 P's – protection, performance, and price -  to evaluate your selection.

PROTECTION

This might seem obvious, but the most important part of choosing the best welding gloves is to make sure they provide the correct level of protection against heat. This means that the higher the level of heat from your process, the more insulating your gloves need to be. However, if the lining is too thick you will lose dexterity and it may become very difficult to hold a small-diameter rod with a thick glove. If extra heat protection is required try a “glove saver” which goes over the top of your welding glove.

Also, make sure that your welding gloves are certified to AS/NZS 2161.4 Occupational Protective Gloves – Protection Against Thermal Risks (heat and fire). Not only does this ensure you are getting the very best and safest protection but it will help simplify choosing which brand of welding gloves to get.

PERFORMANCE

Performance relates to the features that will benefit you the most. This will include things like comfort, dexterity, durability and protection level.

When it comes to performance we highly recommend Elliotts Big Red® Welding Gloves which have been designed for extra durability and comfort as well as providing additional protection against heat. If you require even more protection we recommend the Elliotts Kevlar® Blue which has additional leather reinforcing covering the palm and thumb area and an extra reinforcing knuckle bar strip across the back of the hand.

PRICE

Although it might seem like a great idea at the time to purchase the cheapest glove on display, do not fall for this trap. More often than not, the gloves are cheap because they are made from low-grade thin material and as a result, will burn and dry up faster than a well-made quality glove. Remember “Price is what you pay. Value is what you get” While price is an important factor to consider, it should not be the drive of your decision. Find a pair of quality welding gloves that are comfortable and will perform and show you value your welders, this will save you money in the long term.

We highly recommend using the 3 P’s when shopping for the best welding gloves as it will save you time and money, as well as possibly prevent a trip to the emergency room.
