Read the Mark: The New Big Red® CRX IMPACT Welding Glove

The Big Red® CRX is one of our most popular welding gloves. Welders like it for the feel, the fit and the full 360° cut protection. What it has never had is protection against impact.

A welder’s shift isn’t all welding. There’s fit-up, handling plate and fittings, swinging a hammer and working in tight spots around the plant. Welders get knocked, crushed and pinched like everyone else on site, but a standard welding glove isn’t built for it. Plenty of sites mandate impact gloves for fitters and riggers. Do they work for welders?

The new Big Red® CRX IMPACT adds a moulded TPR exoskeleton across the back of the hand and fingers, certified for impact protection under EN 388. Everything else is the CRX your team already knows: the same dexterity, the same 3D pre-curved fit and the same Cut 5 / TDM F liner. And like every Elliotts welding glove, it’s independently certified by Intertek SAI Global to today’s standards.

The same Big Red® CRX, now armoured against knocks, crushes and pinch points.

Read the Mark: what’s on the Big Red® CRX IMPACT cuff

Every number on a welding glove cuff tells you something about how it performed in testing. Here’s what the Big Red® CRX IMPACT markings mean.

The impact letter

This launch is about one character on the cuff: the “P” at the end of the EN 388 code.

The 2016 edition of EN 388 added an impact test for gloves that claim protection against knocks. A 2.5kg striker hits the protective zone, such as the knuckles and back of the hand, with 5 joules of energy, and a sensor underneath measures how much force comes through. To pass, the average transmitted force has to stay at or below 7kN, with no single strike above 9kN. Gloves that pass, carry a "P" at the end of the EN 388 code.

There are no levels. It’s pass or fail, and only a pass is marked: a “P” at the end of the code. No “P”, no impact claim.

Anyone can stitch extra leather over the knuckles. A “P” means the protection has been tested and passed. That’s the difference between padding and certified impact protection.

EN 388:2016 · 4544FP

EN 388 rates protection against mechanical risks.

Abrasion 4, cut 5, tear 4, puncture 4 and TDM cut F, every one the top of its scale, plus a pass on impact. If your site specifies Cut 5 / TDM F and impact protection, this glove meets both, and it’s a certified welding glove too.

EN 407:2020 · 434344

EN 407 rates protection against heat and flame. The six digits are six separate tests, each scored from 1 to 4, with 4 the top of the scale.

Top level for flame spread, convective heat and both molten metal tests, with no X’s. Every property has been tested, to the current edition of the standard.

EN 12477 · Type A+B

Heat resistance on its own doesn’t make a glove suitable for welding. EN 12477 is the standard written for welders’ gloves. Type A prioritises protection for heavier work such as MIG and stick welding. Type B prioritises dexterity for TIG.

The Big Red® CRX IMPACT is certified to EN 12477:2001+A1:2005, Type A+B, with Dexterity 5 under AS/NZS 2161.2:2020, the top of the dexterity scale. Protection for MIG and stick, and the feel for TIG, in one glove.

Arc welding · EN 1149-2

EN 12477 has an optional requirement for gloves used in arc welding: no conductive parts, such as metal rivets, through the glove, and electrical resistance above 10⁵ ohms, tested to EN 1149-2.

The Big Red® CRX IMPACT meets it, as does every welding glove in the Elliotts range. No welding glove protects against electric shock from faulty equipment or live work, and resistance drops when a glove is wet, dirty or sweaty.

The Certified Product mark · SMK41830

Anyone can print a pictogram and a row of numbers on a glove. A certification mark and licence number are different. They show that an independent body has reviewed the testing, materials, manufacturing and labelling, and keeps checking. You can look the licence up yourself on Intertek SAI Global’s public register.

The Big Red® CRX IMPACT carries the Intertek SAI Global Certified Product mark, licence SMK41830.

Certified to today’s standards

In January 2011, Elliotts became the first company to have welding gloves certified to Australian standards. This year we moved the heat and flame certification of our welding gloves to EN 407:2020, the current edition, and Elliotts was the first company certified by SAI Global to EN 407:2020.

Every new Elliotts welding glove launched is certified, and the Big Red® CRX IMPACT is no exception. It’s certified by Intertek SAI Global to AS/NZS 2161.2:2020, AS/NZS 2161.3:2020 and EN 12477 Type A+B, and independently rated to EN 407:2020 and EN 388:2016.
